Thorsten Konrad [founder and owner of TWK Unternehmensgruppe] and Daniel Konrad [technical manager of JK-Computer GmbH] are working in motorsports since 1997. Both are wide experienced with technical backround from amateursport to highend-pro-racing in a lot of series like Blancpain, Creventic, GT-Masters, ILMC, IMSA, VLN and WEC as well as the 24h of Le Mans, Nürburgring, Spa and of course Dubai. Almost all public 12h Races – like f.e. Daytona or Bathurst – are also not unknown. There experience in long distance races is huge.
In 2001, Thorsten Konrad started his own business as a avocational self-employment. After more than two decades of now runing self-employment business, he has now been able to rely on a large network of partners and freelancers.
During the founder’s childhoods, there parents‘ business sparked there interest in the IT sector.
As early as the early 1980s, there father’s business had repeatedly brought them into contact with IT systems and network technology. Long before Thorsten’s first job, he gained his first depth technical knowledge in the early 1990s through holiday jobs – on the „production line“ or as a „temp“ field service assitance for larger projects – in his parents‘ business. At that time, the industry was still in the beginning, so it was easy to establish direct and personal contacts with manufacturers. Having been confronted with technology in the pioneering days of IT, there was no question of fear in contact, and his father’s passion for experiment meant there were almost no limits. In this period in particular, components and applications were not described or documented at all, or rather incorrectly; in most cases, you had to help yourself by trying things out or implementing previous experiences.
His own passion for experiment then brought him to racing in the early 2000s; he was enthusiastic about reading and analyzing measurement data and also later programming control units and the resulting influence on the vehicles on the race track. The balancing act or the link between IT and racing was brought about by the requirements and needs for online transmission of measurement data from the vehicle to the control center; here, Thorsten Konrad’s team was able to fall back on well-known technologies such as modems, radio transmission and, in some cases, WLAN solutions from everyday IT, which they then used to communicate with the racing vehicles, long before technologies such as live telemetry via LTE networks existed. Thorsten Konrad describes himself as one of the people who came up with the ideas for the solutions that exist on the market today in the field of measurement data transmission via LTE and IoT, as he and his brother were among the people who presented the requirements to the two control unit manufacturers that dominated the market at the time, defined them and presented them to the developers in meetings. But so-called „carriers“, i.e. the mobile phone providers themselves, were also discussion partners at the time.
„Working with highly innovative technologies in information and communication technology, building system technology, racing and simulation technology as well as microcontroller programming has become our daily business through a hobby and a leisure activity,“ says the entrepreneur.
Since 2020, the owner has devoted himself more to promoting young talent in motorsport and engineering. „Why shouldn’t you pass your knowledge to younger generations to ensure that the know-how is preserved. I have met many young people in racing in recent years and am happy about every single path that everyone has taken. I am still in contact with many of them today and know their values and the successes they have achieved,” says Thorsten Konrad.
